Tools that journalists use in their reporting process may not be applicable overseas, but that doesn’t mean cyber hygiene should be tossed aside.
So, how can any reporter covering the Winter Olympics, which runs through Feb. 20 in Beijing, safeguard themselves?
Start with some of these basic cyber hygiene techniques from our Toolkit for Journalists.
After accounting for all of your devices, make sure they’re updated. You won’t want to expose yourself to a cyber attack because you have a piece of software on your laptop that’s outdated.
And, when you do communicate with your newsroom, do so securely. That could mean using an alternative messaging platform or email service. We recommend several in our toolkit, as well as how to browse the web securely.
Again, Olympics aside, these practices are good to keep in mind and use when reporting in another country.
